The War on Fifth Avenue, by Katy Subscribe to rss feed for Katy

Lazy days of summer.
Just me and the boys.
Leaving our houses in exploration of
downtown Portland.
Without specific destination,
we embark on our adventure.
The heavily beating sun
warms our heads and necks.
Tanning and burning exposed skin.
The fountain rises before us like
a mirage of comfort.
“Let’s have a water fight!”
The challenge is extended and met.
Four spouts and Four of us.
The battle begins.
One out,
and then another.
The wounded sit
on the edge of the closest bulding,
Laughing and dripping,
watching the remaining soldiers.
Bent over at the waist,
pressing their pointer finger to the edge in
just the right place.
Making perfect arches of water
to strike the opposition.
Neither can stop laughing.
Neither will give up.
Two hysterical boys,
soaked to the bone,
on Fifth Avenue.
