Wednesday's Child, by Chuck Shorter
|
I. AN EMACIATED GIRL SO WEE
CAME UPTO ME AND SAID
"SIR COULD YOU BUY ME
A SLICE OF BREAD AND
A CUP OF MILK OR TEA?"
II. DEEP SOULFUL EYES
MOIST WITH TEARS
A SWEET YET HESITANT SMILE
SHE LOOKED UP AT ME AWHILE
THIS CHILD OF TENDER YEARS
III.HOT BUTTERED SCONES
FOR HER I BOUGHT
GOLDEN, CRISP, FLAKY AND LIGHT
HER SMILE OF THANKS LIT UP THE NIGHT
HOW PLEASED SHE SEEMS I THOUGHT
IV. NEXT DAY THE BAKER BROKE MY HEART
"SIR THE CHILD IS GONE" HE CRIED
IN THE FREEZING WINTER COLD SHE'D DIED
ALONE, DESOLATE AND APART
CHUCK SHORTER
