We Will Always Remember

By Destiny

This poem that I have composed represents what I believe children of the Holocaust may have felt. I can not say for certain how they individually felt in the concentration camps, but one definite statement I can say is that I’m sure this experience was life altering for any survivors. The stories I have read about the Holocaust along with interviews and poems have entirely changed my outlook on the survivors. I thought before that it was just a matter of doing whatever it took to survive, even if that meant abandoning your own faith or people. But I learned it was a combination of smarts and fate. I can not even begin to explain how I would feel in any of those situations, because some of the stories have just put me to tears. Unfortunately I realize horrible things like this happen every day. This is why it is so important to remember and keep these memories alive. My main concern is that these horrors will happen again. I want kids to be educated on this topic so that they realize what these people went through. Hopefully the outcome will be that my children and future generations to come won’t have to go through that. Sometimes it’s hard for people to remember because it is painful, but it will be even more painful to see this happen again to our society. From what I observed through TV, radio, and internet it seems that some Americans are stereotyping American Muslims as terrorists. It can create false fear and hysteria throughout our nation. This may be how it all started, through the hatred of the Germans toward the Jews in Nazi Germany. It all started from fear and then evolved to something more powerful than anyone ever expected. Most societies that are poor, war torn, or in great need of a strong ruler, need a source to blame their misfortunes upon. The Germans seeked out the Jews out as a scapegoat to their problems. One disaster happens and the nation looks for a reason for this event. Sometimes they are so scared that they won’t find the reason so they blame it on the dominating source. In this case the Jews were financially successful at this point, so Hitler had more than enough reason to jealously pin it on the Jews. In Anne Frank’s Diary she wrote “Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.” Despite everything she went through she still managed to see the good in people and that is a lesson that should forever stay with us where ever we go in life. History is already written, but the future is a historic book for us to fill the pages with. So as time moves along and we keep her words in mind we should create a better future for our selves and an even better history left behind.
