A Special Family Christmas, by BitterSweet Subscribe to rss feed for BitterSweet

A knock at the door on Christmas day, Rick is there to
greet. Hugs and kisses exchanged to all as he invites us in
from the heat.

The aroma of turkey fills the air, it’s juices running
thick. A timer rings at the oven door then Debbie yells for
Rick.

A special treat awaits us all as Debbie pulls out the
platter, Rick is cursing under his breath cause he
overcooked the batter.

His treat was a masterpiece despite the extra crunch,
It certainly made for a tasty, delicious, afternoon munch.

For the first time in years our family is together,
A day to always remember, a moment to forever treasure.

We gather around the tree and talk about old times,
Reminiscing back when candy cost only a dime.

While sipping a mug of cocoa Mom begins to tell,
The stories of our childhood, she remembers them all so
well.

Contentment in her voice, a twinkle in her eye,
Her words laced with softness like a gentle lullaby.

Turning back in time to Christmas’s long ago,
Bitter cold winters where the icy winds blow.

Tucked beneath the sheets in our warm and cozy beds,
Waiting for Santa to land on the rooftop above our heads.

Pretending to be asleep though anxious to take a peek,
My brothers decided to join me in the sneak.

We tip-toed out of bed to the edge of the wooden stairs,
Hoping to see what was lying next to the swaying rocking
chair.

Thin sheets of paper cut into perfect squares,
Strings of shiny ribbon curled with extra care.

Big shimmering bows ignite sparkles in the light,
Glistening like diamond dust, oh what a beautiful sight!

We scoot back to bed giggling on the way,
Then look out the window for Santa’s red sleigh.

Snowflakes fall gently from the icy blue sky,
Landing one by one on the window sill nearby.

A room full of treasures just a few feet away,
Wondering and waiting anxiously, for in the morning is
Christmas Day.

Drifting off to sleep to the magical places we go,
Christmas is a time we will never outgrow!

Dedicated to my very special family on Christmas Day 2005.
