Heaven Doth Mock Itself

By Lovers and Madmen •
This idea came to me when I was out on one of my rides and everything was so beautiful. I wanted to experiement with fitting each line into a 9 syllable pattern with some kind of a rhyme scheme. I wrote it on the 21st of March 2009:
"I swear I spied a square of heaven
Creeping around in my line of sight.
The trees were sharper, golden and free;
Seeming untouched by humanity.
The stones, the grasses, the smell of spring,
The Sun unnatural in these grey lands;
An unexpected friend haply back
Pulling back the pain, the shade, the black.
The course of true love touches the hills,
Touches the back of my swollen head,
I am blessed by His heavenly hand
Feeling the full brunt of creation.
Oh, but heaven doth mock itself here,
My species has poisoned its own heart,
For even this sector of heaven
Has been abused, used and pulled apart.
The path is still synthetic, man-made
Under my plastic covered foot wear;
My cotton-mix jeans, with some food stain,
I think I'll buy a new pair again."
