Blink

By essie •
She blinks her eyes for only a moment.
A thousand memories flashing before her eyes.
Like flipping through a stack of photographs shes never seen.
Pale, blue eyes, the color of ice and just as cold, stare although she sees nothing.
The tick of the clock drives in every second she sits alone.
Blink, blink,
Flip-flip-flip
Another minute that feels like a year, and you're glansing at the clock, just like her, but miles away.
A tiny twinge of guilt ignites like a spark.
You stamp it out under your foot because you're right and it's her fault.
Blink.
she's still awake
Blink.
Your hands tingle with anticipation.
Blink.
Slow dancing in a cheap motel room even after the song ends.
Your head spinning, flattery flying, ego growing.
Blink.
There is no one to tuck in your babies, crying themselves to sleep.
Blink.
She is telling you you're better then them.
Blink.
Tear.
Bink.
Sadness.
Blink.
Regret?
Anger and doubt in your children's dreams.
It has been a hard day, tomorrow will be worse.
No sleep again.
She lives this nightmere.
Blink.
You're driving home.
Blink.
Tucking away secrets in the dark.
Blink.
Is she waiting up?
Blink.
Exhausting night.
Blink.
She goes to bed.
She's done waiting for you to come back home.
Blink.
So little but filled with so much hate.
Blink.
Yes, you'll be sleeping alone.
Maybe she'll call and say goodnight.
Blink.
Blink.
Blink.
Was it worth it?
