Shona and Sandy Seahorse

By Leslie Thomson •
(A poem for children of all ages)
Shona the pretty seahorse lived near the Isle of Skye.
At the bay of Kyleakin, she watched everyone go by.
She loved to watch the fishes swim and the dolphins happily play.
And she laughed at all the crabs, scuttling sideways on their way.
One day another seahorse, came swimming down the Sound.
He was big and gold and dashing; the finest seahorse around.
From the moment Shona saw him, her heart was all a-flutter.
And just one look from his handsome eyes melted her like butter.
Then when he first saw Shona, his heart was beating fast;
She was the prettiest thing he’d ever seen, in all the oceans vast.
She gave him such a lovely smile that made his heart to swell,
So he quickly swam across to her, to get to know her well.
“Good day, young lass,” he gallantly said, “Sandy they call me.
I’m going to Eilean Donan and need a guide if you are free.
“Good Sir, my name is Shona. Eilean Donan is quite a way.
But if you’ll permit me to join you, I will take you there this day.”
And so right down Loch Alsh they swam and headed for Ardelve.
And both were happy that they were no longer by themself.
Eilean Donan Castle hoved into view as the sun was going down.
And Shona leaned into Sandy, the bonny seahorse she had found.
The sun went down, the sky grew dark and the stars came out above,
As Shona looked into Sandy’s eyes and she knew she was in love
Then they kissed each other with neither wanting to part;
For when seahorses are kissing, they make the shape of a heart.
They were married at Iona, by a wise old lobster there,
And made their vows to always love and for each other care.
They had their honeymoon in Scapa flow, and in a little while,
There were lots of baby seahorses, swimming up the Sound of Kyle.
