Walking Home

By Maxwell •
County jail finally cut me loose around 3AM.
Got my bearings and headed towards a 7-11.
Streets were completely deserted except the wino,
vomiting in the 7-11 parking lot.
The jail had taken the liberty of putting what little cash I had on an ATM card.
My whole sixteen dollars and thirty-five cents.
I bought a pack of cigarettes and got ten dollars cash back.
Took refuge in the local junior college's elevator for maybe an hour.
Just sat and smoked under the fluorescent lights.
By 5AM I had walked to a Denny's a mile or so away.
Got a newspaper, a cup of coffee, and some wheat toast.
The waitress was cute and young. Early 20's probably.
She was nice to me and refilled my coffee every chance she got.
I got up and paid.
One dollar eighty-five for the toast, two fifteen for the coffee.
Walked a couple miles home.
No one here.
Hopped the fence to the backyard.
Car in the garage was unlocked.
I slept for a few hours. Grimy, and disgusting.
Too broke to kill myself.
Too pussy to follow through with it.
Everything is ugly.
