Secret Vows, by Lunaria

Secret Vows
One evening in summer late
We stood 'neath arch and gate
Unseen by human eyes it was
Made by spirit, bypassing man's laws
Secret vows we said to each other
My kin, father, mother and brother
Looked on from above
As we vowed our love
In white was I dressed
Pearls long my neck caressed
And wearing a pin of butterfly blue
Something borrowed, my shoes were new
You wore a suit of gray
Rushing home from work that day
Bearing one pink rose in your hand
You gave to me, it was so grand
I picked a colorful flower fair
Giving to you your boutonniere
We stood together wrapped in pink love
While the angels watched from above
After the traditional vows were said
We said our own vows instead
Pictures we took, ate cake, drank wine
Oh, that night turned out so fine
I hid my wedding garb away
And we were happy day after day
The years went by so fast and when
I began to age, it was then
That you began to go away
And break the vow we said that day
Who could blame you?, Surely not I
For mirrors, bless them, do not lie
They told me true that I was old
There was even silver in the gold
My face was lined and I was fat
We broke our marriage rings and that was that
I painfully let you go
But here is something you don't know
You'll never find a love so true
As the one we had, me and you
And when your new love begins to fade
You'll remember the love that heaven made
And for our union you will long
But too late for I'll be gone.
