Unfinished Melody, by Lunaria

Unfinished Melody
Sitting in my easy chair
Soft light glowing on my hair
That once was golden light
Now is streaked with white
Leaning back I breathe a sigh
Wipe a tear from my eye
That welled up from a memory old
And left me shivering and cold
Once I was a pretty lass
Not too smart but I had class
Eyes of blue, clear and bright
Skin alabaster light
I had a perky little nose
I wore the newest style clothes
My feet were small, my fingers long
I did not do any wrong
Then one day I hopped a train
In the middle of a pouring rain
I left the town where I was born
And rode that train 'til the next morn
We stopped in a small, quaint town
I liked it's looks and I hopped down
I met a man and married him
My life was full up to the brim
I bore him children, twelve in all
I buried him in the late fall
Now I sit in reverie
Of what has been and what was to be
Back in the town where I was born
I left a husband there to mourn
Was his life good, was it bad
I'll never know what we might have had
Now my life is winding down
I won't go back to my home town
I don't want to know what might have been
For I was happy, see my grin.

UnFinished Melody is a haunting title to introduce a poem about the life of love with the unfinished business of "what might have been"...and perhaps the same could be said for one's original home...especially when one can knot return...MeaningFUll...TY! |
