The Evergreen, by Lunaria

The Evergreen
All nature is breathing softly in sleep
Under winter's warm blanket of white
Elemental beings are underground deep
Dreaming of spring's coming delight
Evergreen stands like a stalwart knight
Protecting his charges in slumber
At dawning winter birds take flight
Finding feeders without number
Evergreen's prickly rooms are perfect
For these feathered friends of mine
The evergreen standing so erect
Make many a bedroom so fine
Never sleeping when temperatures fall
Standing with outstretched branches
Evergreen's a shelter for one and all
When the snowflakes begin their dances
When darkness falls over the earth
And winter sun has gone to bed
Squirrels scamper for all their worth
To the evergreen they are led
When moon changes places with sun
And winter life's on the move
We know another day has begun
And all is in their groove.
