First Snow, by Lunaria
|
First Snow
Sleeping branches hang heavy with new fallen snow
There's no sign of it stopping and the moon is aglow
Lighting my way for the street lights are dark
Helping me find my way to the park
The benches are barren except for the snow
Which is piled as high as it can go
Brushing the snow with a glove full of holes
I lay me down as the tower bell tolls
I knocked on the door but no one was home
Left was I on the streets to roam
Hungry am I but there's nothing to eat
Cold am I with no boots on my feet
No money have I to buy me a room for tonight
Sleep will I on this bench 'til first light
The blanket of snow will keep me warm
And I will sleep through this storm
Morning came but he didn't move to rise
Just laid there with tightly closed eyes
During the night his spirit fled
Leaving his frozen body dead
Two angels came to assist with his flight
Helping to lead him into the light
Large, golden gates swung open wide
He was admitted warmly inside
Welcome, Jim, what took you so long?
We thought you took a turn that was wrong
We sent guide angels to bring you here
And a warrior one to bring up the rear
We missed you, Jim, we missed you so
And knew you would come at the first big snow
Be at peace, Jim, at last you're home
Not for a long time will you roam
Rest now , Jim, you need to sleep
A loving vigil we will keep
Yes, weary am I since my birth
On that beautiful planet they call Earth.
