once upon a time, i wrote a poem for you
i thought it was kind of important
at least, it was to me
to you, it didn't mean a thing
it didn't phase you, didn't touch you
didn't hurt you, didn't change you
you did not faulter
just sat there and read it
with no expression on your face
it's a hard face to read
from a million miles away
a slight exaggeration, but it feels just the same
i thought you were kind of important
perhaps i was somehow mistaken
i took you to be God's upmost perfection
and you just took me for granted
the ball has been in your court, lovely
for a century and a half
a slight exaggeration, but it feels just the same
it might as well be a billion years
because you're actions never change
for once, i wish i could forget everything
leave the ecstacy behind
leave this cloud of anger and frustration
escape the fog that has lasted a lifetime
a slight exaggeration, but it feels just the same
it might as well have been two lives
because i have wasted yours
you've shown me the truth in it all:
i'm not worth a minute of your time
and, once upon a time, i never wanted change
no one quite measured up to you
you set the standard, you set it high
so high that it touched mountain tops
a slight exaggeration, but it feels just the same
it might as well have been the clouds
because no one has come close to reaching it
this bar has left me lonely and thoughtful
i am lost in scattered memories and broken dreams
once upon a time, i loved you, i loved you
and there's no exaggeration here
