A butterfly’s tale

By ray! •
Every time we meet
I want you that much more
I feel as fragile as a butterfly
And have little broken wings.
With each unthinking piece of praise
You make me want to stay,
Not flee as I have often done
My wings gain little hazardous holes
As I fight the desire to turn around
and crash land in your arms
I’ll ask you to hold me
Protect me
Love me
But not a soul must guess
The feelings I’ve repressed,
So I’ll keep flying away
Until that one fateful day
When my wings will fail
And my courage, run dry
And I tell you how I feel
And wait for your response
I can foresee no further
I’m not a sorceress or seer
Maybe you’ll hold me
Protect me
Love me
Or maybe you’ll tell me
you can’t be there for me
maybe you’ll net yourself off
denying me access
to the things we once shared
you’ll keep me at a distance
to keep me from pain
but you won’t realize
you’ve already killed me.
Understand why I can’t fly away.
Unless you hold me,
Protect me
Love me
I have no chance at life
My wings have been punctured
One too many times
I don’t have the strength
To fly away
I’ll fall to the ground,
I’ll be without hope
Of a new saviour
No one could be
as wonderful as you
For who could hold,
Protect
Love
A butterfly whose wings
have been ruined by your touch
